Although the weather in May wasn’t what we’re used to at that time of year (normally we would expect more sunlight), there is one positive. The rain has been great for our newly planted trees.
In partnership with Bilbrook Parish Council and the Forest of Mercia CIC, we’ve planted new street trees along Pendeford Mill Lane and added to the trees we planted last year on the Skatepark field. The Forest of Mercia have also paid for a new woodland and additional tree planting in Banks’ Field.
It may have been a damp start to summer, but it’s been great for the new trees and let’s face it, they need all the help they can get. Last year the trees we planted in the Skatepark field really suffered due to the heatwave we had in the summer and they are now showing the stress they experienced, with two trees already dead.
The extra rainfall this spring has given the newly planted trees the best possible start and they’re looking all the better for it. Our new trees will help mitigate against climate change, create new habitats for wildlife and keep the area cool during prolonged hot periods which will encounter more of due to our warming climate.
