Many nature lovers gathered in early November 2024 for another session with the Belvide Ringers. It wasn’t the best turnout for the birds with numbers below what we normally see this time of year. For a while it was looking like we weren’t going to catch any but things picked up as the morning went on. The species we caught were:
- 3 Robins, 1 which had been previously ringed in 2021
- 12 Goldfinch, 1 which was very young, a recently fledged chick
- 8 Great tits, 1 which had been previously ringed earlier this year
- 15 Blue tits
- 7 Long tailed tits
- 1 Redpoll
- 1 Greenfinch
- 1 Blackbird.
It was very encouraging to re-catch the robin which shows it has chosen Jubilee Wood as its home and there is sufficient food for it to thrive.
As pleasurable as this event is, there is a serious side to the vitally important work the Belvide Ringers do in monitoring our bird life and helping to build the data of what we are seeing in the wood. It’s also important for us to learn about the birds’ behaviour and what we can do to help them. We ask those who have gardens to dedicate an area to wildlife, be that installing bird boxes or feeders or letting an area go wild for nature, or both. Our wildlife is in serious decline and we must all do what we can to help redress this.
As always, a massive thank you to Colin and all the Belvide Ringers and Pet Stop Codsall who very generously donated a large bag of sunflower hearts for us to fill our feeders with.
